Unless most people heading to Kiruna in Swedish Lapland, my primary aim on that trip wasn't to see the Northern Lights or go dog-sledding, but rather to learn more about the move of the town and visit it while it's still at its old location.

Long story short, our trip to Kiruna was rather mediocre thanks to countless of issues with public transport as outlined in this post. However there was one item on our itinerary that was worth all the hastle of getting to Kiruna in the first place: a visit to the famous Icehotel Sweden!

I cannot put this place into words other than that it's magical and that you should visit it at least once in your life! These 12 pictures might prove my point:

The 27th Icehotel. Now, it has all melted and the ice went back to where it came from: the river Torne in the little village of Jukkasjärvi in Swedish Lapland.

The hotel is made completely out of ice and the rooms get a completely new design every year. There are only two things that can be found at the icehotel each year: the doors covered in reindeer skin with reindeer antlers being used as door handles...

... and the ice chandelier, which is the highlight of the interior of the hotel!

The Icehotel invites artists from all over the world to design the rooms at the hotel each year and you can stay at the craziest rooms, like this one!

While the beds at the icehotel are of course made of ice, you sleep on a mattress with reindeer skins to keep you warm!

If you can sleep that is. I for one would spend all night admiring the art around me...

... especially if the views in my room were anything as fascinating like this!

As the artists come from all over the world, your room doesn't have to feel "Arctic". This suite proves that it's totally possible to create a "Moroccan dream" out of ice!

Ice is an organic material and during late winter in March and April, it starts to melt. That doesn't affect your stay in any way and you don't need to be afraid that the ice will crash down on you though. There are massive blocks of ice in the hallway of the hotel to secure its roof. In late winter they will however start moving and bending until the hotel slowly starts to sink (the ice melts at the top first, thanks to the sun) and dissolve in spring.

As any regular hotel, the icehotel also has a bar - an icebar! Here, even the glasses are made of ice and you need to drink fast if you want to re-use your glass - otherwise it might just melt in your hands!

There also is the famous ice church where you can get married if you wish. I have to say that I never really had the urge to get married but standing in this church definitely made me turn into a hopeless romantic as well. What you can see here by the way, is the altar of the 27th ice church, depicting the Midnight Sun. The church isn't decorated in any religious matter, but rather takes its origin in the local culture of the Sami people and the Arctic surroundings of Swedish Lapland.

Do you wish it was winter now so that you could experience the icehotel yourself? Well, here's good news: it doesn't have to be winter for you to visit (or stay) in the icehotel! This year, the new Icehotel 365 has opened and it's the very first icehotel in the world to exist year-round. Thanks to the Midnight Sun and 24 hours of daylight in Swedish Lapland in summer, this hotel is powered completely by solar panels, which enable you to sleep in a room made entirely of ice in the midst of summer!
