10 Photos to inspire you to go on a Winter Road Trip in the Arctic

Driving on snow and ice sounds scary and I can totally understand if your immediate reaction to the title of this post was "hell no"! But bear with me for a second cause driving in winter in the Arctic isn't all just blizzards and avalanches.

Especially not on the "highways" or well, main roads in Norway and Sweden.

There's a pretty good snow ploughing service in place here in Northern Norway and the main roads are pretty well looked after. Smaller roads are closed if the weather is too bad or there'll be a convoy service several times a day where you are only allowed to drive with the snow ploughing service guiding you.

Not that I'm recommending you to drive on those kinds of roads. If you're not used to driving on snow and ice, you shouldn't leave the main roads up North like the E8 or E6. Your rental car will come with winter tires though so unless you actually get into a white-out, you should be fine!

And especially now in late winter in March and April, the road conditions are usually much better than during the earlier winter months and if you're lucky, the sun will come out to work some winter wonderland magic!

Don't forget your sunglasses!

The pictures were taken in the borderland of Norway and Sweden, somewhere around Junkerdal and Merkenes, on the Arctic Circle.

You can find more posts from this trip to Swedish Lapland here and since I've just gotten back from a trip to Kiruna, there'll be more Lapland magic coming up so stay tuned!

What do you love most about road trips? and Would you like to drive along the Arctic Circle?
