The Norwegian concept of "Kos" or How to Spend the Perfect Autumn Weekend

Welcome back to Typisk Norsk (= Typically Norwegian) – a series on all the little quirks of Norwegians that make it so interesting to live in this country! Today I'm telling you all about the Norwegian concept of "kos"!

Many people have heard about the Danish concept of "hygge" which basically describes a feeling of comfort by doing something that's good for your soul. Well, the Norwegian concept of "kos" or getting "koselig" is just like that!  

I've noticed it on my very first trip to Norway already - Norwegians are genii when it comes to how to make the most of grey and rainy autumn days, which quite frankly, we usually get more than enough of. 

So today I thought I'd let you in on the secret and tell you how to spend a perfect Norwegian autumn weekend!

 

1. Coffee

Norwegians love coffee and apparently, the nation comes second in the list of coffee consuming countries, right after Finland. It looks like the average Norwegian drinks 7kg of coffee a year - can you believe that?!

 

2. A walk in the woods/mountains or at the nearest beach/lake

After you had your 2 gallons of coffee for breakfast, it's time to head outside. Norwegians are outdoor freaks and who can blame them? After all, the country offers stunning nature everywhere you go!

A perfect autumn Saturday is therefore best spent outside. Whether that's on a walk in the woods or a hike up the mountains, or a little stroll at the nearest beach or lake. It all depends on where you live and how fit you are but especially in Northern Norway, you've got to make the most of the limited daylight hours we have in the dark months, and that's best done outside!

 

3. Come home for a cup of tea or hot chocolate

You know what I love most about going for a walk in freezing temperatures? Coming home to snuggle up on the couch and drink a cup of tea!

I mean sure, the crisp air is certainly enjoyable and the views on pink mountains during sunset is stunning, but nothing beats the feeling of coming inside and feel your body warm up again after an hour spent outside in the cold!

 

4. Light candles and grab a blanket

And that feeling is only reinforced by lighting candles and warming up under a cosy blanket! Believe me, that's the ultimate way of getting koselig for me!

 

5. Watch a movie/read a book

Now that you've done your exercise for the day, it's totally fine to relax on the couch with a good book or movie! Need some recommendations? How about these ones:
 

- Troll Hunter 

What's more Norwegian than trolls? This movie is perfect for a grey autumn day and probably one of the best Norwegian movies ever made ;)

 

- Lonely Planet Scandinavia

Saturday afternoons are perfect to plan your next trip and Lonely Planet is something I could read over and over again and just daydream about my next vacation!

Honestly? I don't know of any book that could possible be more Norwegian! Forget any Scandi Noir novel - this book sounds perfect for an autumn afternoon on the couch!

 

6. Eat tacos!

Yes, Taco Friday is a thing in Norway and most supermarkets offer discounts on taco ingredients all throughout the weekend. I personally think that Tacos is a great comfort food and perfect for dark autumn nights!

 

7. Sleep and repeat!

Saturday went by too quick? Just do everything all over again on Sunday!

 

Now I have to admit, this is my personal definition of a perfect autumn weekend. To get koselig in Norwegian just means to have a good time and enjoy yourself and I do realize that not everyone likes to be at home as much as I am. 

So if going out to party or invite friends over for dinner is more your thing, go ahead. Kos knows no limits as long as you have a good time and do what's good for you!
